Sick of Muscle Knots That Keep Coming Back?

Those tight, sore spots you’re experiencing are called trigger points, and they can affect more than just one area. What you feel in your neck, shoulders, or back is often connected to deeper patterns of tension throughout the body that can cause headaches, upper back pain or even low back pain. Our team uses precise, targeted trigger point injections/therapy to locate the source, release built-up tension, and help restore proper muscle function. By focusing on these specific points, we can help improve mobility, reduce discomfort, and support better overall movement so your body can function the way it’s supposed to.

A systematic review and meta-analysis found that trigger point injections significantly reduced Acute Myofascial Pain compared to medical management alone.

What Are Trigger Point Injections (TPI)?

Trigger point injections (TPI) are a minimally invasive treatment designed to relieve pain caused by tight, irritated muscle knots known as trigger points. Injections differ slightly from trigger point therapy, which includes manual pressure (offered here at Allied) and massage.

Trigger points can develop anywhere in the body and are often responsible for persistent pain, stiffness, and limited range of motion that doesn’t seem to respond to rest or other conservative treatments.

During the procedure, a small needle is inserted directly into the trigger point, delivering medication (we use lidocaine or Sarapin) that helps relax the muscle, reduce inflammation, and interrupt the pain cycle at its source.

The process is quick, typically taking just a few minutes per site, and most patients tolerate it well with little to no discomfort.

Many patients notice meaningful relief shortly after their first treatment, though a series of sessions is often recommended for longer-lasting results.

I sought trigger point treatment following a car accident a little over a year ago which has left me with ongoing tightness and pain in my back and shoulder muscles. Along with massage therapy and adjustments, the trigger point treatment has tremendously relieved the tightness in my back and shoulders. It has made a noticeable difference!

What Causes Trigger Points?

Trigger points typically develop as a result of muscle overuse, repetitive strain, poor posture, or acute injury.  Stress and inactivity can also play a role.

When muscle fibers become overstimulated or are unable to fully relax, they contract into a tight, irritated knot that restricts blood flow and traps metabolic waste in the tissue.

Over time, this creates a self-reinforcing cycle of tension and pain that can be difficult to resolve on its own.

That’s why addressing the underlying trigger point directly (a key motto for us here at Allied), rather than just managing symptoms, tends to produce more meaningful, lasting relief.

Do Trigger Point Injections Work?

Research shows that targeted trigger point treatments can provide significantly greater pain relief than medication alone for Acute Myofascial Pain.

Our patients have experienced noticeable pain relief from trigger point injections in several areas of the body.

That said, results vary depending on the individual, the number and location of trigger points, and how long the issue has been present.

When combined with complementary care like chiropractic or physical therapy, many patients find that trigger point injections produce significantly better outcomes than either approach alone.

What Steroid Is Used for Trigger Point Injections?

The medication used in trigger point injections varies depending on the patient’s needs and the provider’s clinical judgment.

We use lidocaine or Sarapin instead of a steroid to temporarily block pain signals at the injection site and help the muscle relax.

How Long Do Trigger Point Injections Last?

The duration of relief varies from patient to patient, but many people experience improvement lasting anywhere from a few weeks to several months following treatment.

Consistency matters when it comes to treating trigger points. Patients who complete a recommended series of treatments and support their care with healthy movement habits tend to maintain results longer.

Do Trigger Point Injections Hurt?

Most patients find the procedure very tolerable, often describing it as a brief, localized pressure or mild sting at the injection site.

Trigger point injections are considered a safe, well-established, minimally invasive procedure with a strong track record when performed by a trained provider.

Serious complications are rare, and our team takes every precaution to ensure your comfort and safety throughout the process.

How Often Can You Get Trigger Point Injections?

The frequency of treatment depends on your individual response and the nature of your condition, but we typically do injections weekly. Usually, we’ll do 3-4 sessions, and then as needed from there.

Our team will work with you to build a treatment schedule that aligns with your goals, your body’s response, and your overall care plan.
